Investing in a solar power system is a great way to harness clean, renewable energy, but understanding the warranties that protect your panels and components is equally important. Types of Solar Panel Warranties

Performance Warranty

A performance warranty guarantees that your solar panels will produce a certain percentage of their rated power output over a specified period, usually between 25 and 30 years. Most manufacturers guarantee around 90% production for the first 10 years and around 80% for up to 25 years. This covers you against panels degrading faster than expected and ensures you keep benefiting from strong energy output across the life of your system.

Product Warranty

Product warranties generally last 10 to 25 years and cover any defects in the physical components of your solar panels. If a panel is found to have a manufacturing defect within the warranty period, the manufacturer will typically repair or replace it. However, these warranties don’t cover damage from external factors like severe weather or incorrect installation, so it’s important to maintain and service your system regularly to avoid voiding your coverage.

Workmanship Warranty

This warranty covers issues that arise from the installer’s work, such as poor wiring or improper mounting. Duration varies, but many installers offer a workmanship warranty of 5 to 10 years. If any installation-related faults occur within that timeframe, you can claim repairs at little or no cost, depending on the installer’s policy.

Key Considerations for Solar Warranties

Warranty Terms and Conditions: Always read the fine print to understand exactly what’s covered.

Exclusions: Check for limitations relating to factors like severe weather, poor maintenance, or unauthorised modifications.

Manufacturer vs. Installer: Know who is responsible for each part of your system. Performance and product issues often go through the manufacturer, while workmanship claims go through the installer.

Australian Consumer Law: Your rights under Australian Consumer Law are additional to any warranties offered by manufacturers or installers, providing an extra layer of protection.

Insurance Options: Some companies offer insurance to guarantee coverage if a manufacturer or installer goes out of business.
